Kotlin Island (named here “l’Isle de Kronstat”)
in Gulf of Finland.
Shown:
Sand-bars around the island, Big stone (on the northern shore
of the island), forests, rush in the north and west part of the
island, four settlements in the centre of the island. System of
fortress works, arranged on the islands with separate portions:
along its south shore, on the east end and on north shore of the
island. Built in 1704, Kronslot Fortress is shown out of scale
on the sand-bar, south from the island. New forts were laid later:
Alexander-shants (from 1710) on the west end of the island etc.
The harbours (from 1712), earthen multi-bastion fortification
(from 1712) with lunets and a moat are not shown.
Annotation:
A unique map with early projects of fortifications for the city’s
defence. The manuscript original map from J.-N. Delisle’s
collection performed on paper with black China ink is kept in
Paris, in BAN there is a reduced photocopy. The island territory
is low-lying except the east part. On the basis of the rendering,
the map could be dated 1704-1710.
