The map of Retusaari Island with Kronstadt and Kronslot. [1721-1722].
1 p. Manuscript. Illuminated. Paper, Indian ink, watercolour. 387,2x480,8 mm. Swedish.
North-oriented.
Decoration: Perspective view of Retusaari Island from south-west, decorative compass card.
Territory: A part of the area of Gulf of Finland with Retusaari Island in the centre.
Shown: Piers and “magazines” (stores) on the shore, which were constructed from 1709, harbours on the south shore of the island, which were constructed from 1712, a canal’s project (1721-1722). Kronslot Fortress is shown from the island south. The reconstruction was fixed on 5 (16) of December 1715, but it was begun in reality from January 7 (18), 1716; south-west from Retusaari Island on the sand-bar there is the Citadel, constructed in 1722-1724.
Annotation: A special attention was paid to the fortification and defence structures. The construction works were carried out by the soldiers of F.S. Tolbukhin’s, P.I. Ostrovsky’s and I.M. Molchanov’s regiments. The general leadership from 1710 by brigade-leader Poroshin. Remarkable is that the drawing of Retusaari Island and its perspective view are very inaccurate. The outlines of objects, of the shoreline are unreal as though they were made “by heart”. One can suppose that this is a result of an intelligence action. Probable date of the plan is 1721-1722, it’s connected with the Niestadt peace treaty.
