Rendering of the islands that are situated downstream from Nyenskans. ca. 1650
1 p. Manuscript. Illuminated. Paper, Indian ink. Watercolour. 303,7?355,4 mm. Swedish.
Scale [1:], east-oriented.
Decoration: picture of trees along the channels in the Neva mouth and along the gulf shore.
Territory: the Neva downstream from the point of confluence of its right tributary Black Stream (now Okhta R.) to the mouth.
Shown: The town of Nyen, quadrangular wooden estate of the Royal governor-general in the area of future Nyenskans Fortress, settlements on the islands, brick-yard on the right bank of Neva, a part of Nyen-Vyborg road with a post office. Homestead and village owners (Karl Mernet, Krudde) are mentioned. In the Gulf of Lakhta places of good fishing are marked. Depth measures are absent, so some texts along the channels of the mouth and along the riverbed of Neva depict the hydrographic situation. So the signs by the central channel of the mouth are “very shallow water”, by the left bank “the river is shallow”. The following signs testify to the fact that Neva was the main water way in this region: downstream Neva R. on top of the map is: “Neva River flows into Ladoga Lake by Nöteborg” , along the right channel ”right way to Nyen”. In the mouth of the right channel of Neva are two sunk Russian boats.
The Finnish names of islands are signed: Birch (Koiwo Sari), Cross (Risti Sari), Elk (Hirwi Sari), Fish (Kala Sari), Basil (Wassi Sari) and so on.
Annotation: Watercolour, showing Izhora islets in the Neva’s head was worked out by Eric Nilsson Aspegreen. Neva’s head is not like nowadays – shapes of the islands were changing, channels were appearing and disappearing.
Literature: S. Kepsu.
